My last trip was in December and then as usual busy with office and other work. 13 Feb got a day free so decided to visit near by places in Mumbai. So start thinking what I haven't visited yet and the first thing came in my mind was Elephanta island.
About Elephanta island.
Is one of a number of islands in Mumbai. This island is a popular tourist destination because of the island's cave temples, the Elephanta Caves, that have been carved out of rock. The caves are a great reflection of ancient temple architecture.
To reach Elephanta island you need to first reach to Gateway of India. Nearest railway station is Mumbai CST. From Gateway of India, you are just a 50 minute away from Elephanta island by the ferry.
In morning we reach Mumbai CST around 9 AM and take a taxi from outside of CST station to Gateway of India. It will cost you around 30 rupees. In gateway of India there are many option for ferry. You will find many agents outside of gateway. The return ferry ride will cost 140/180 rupee for single person. We had taken tickets for small ferry because that ferry was going immediately and we dont wanted to wait half hour more for double deck ferry.
It was awesome experience in ferry ride, you will see siberian birds swarm flying along with your boat.
Please carry some corn, kurkure or another bird food to feed them, you will be amaze to see how they catch kurkure thrown to them in air. Your time will pass like that, By feeding them and enjoying ride.
After 50 min or in hour you will reach in the Elephanta jetty. Be care full while getting out from ferry, sometimes it's slippery and you may need to go through between many ferry.
In Elephanta jetty you can take toy train or just walk to the 200-300 steps of the Elephanta island to reach starting point of cave. Climb around 100-150 steps and you reach the Caves.
While climbing you will find many local shopping stalls of local village people. They have good collection of variety of product.
In elephanta there are 5 caves, two cannon and amazing view from top which is worth watching.
The caves house has some magnificent rock carvings. Most of them depict Shri Shiva in various forms. You can gate guide book/guide at shopping stalls. Most of security guards have better knowledge about caves so they can give you good information about caves and god Shiva.
After that we went to see cannon , to go to cannon you need to again come down to starting point of cave and take right side way to go to cannon .
Amazing way from top of view
First cannon
Second cannon
While roaming just beware of monkeys. If you have some important bags in your hand then please take care of it.
Plenty of small eateries are available for snack and/or lunch. Food in the restaurant is average, costly and not worth of what you pay. Toilet are clean hear.
Last ferry from Elephanta to Gateway of India is at 6PM. Overall this was good one day trip
